aromatherapy–do soapstone diffusers need to be polished?

I bought a soapstone diffuser. the outside is polished, but I just noticed that the inside essential oil well (where the liquid goes) is not polished at all. The texture is a bit rough.

If I use it, will the essential oils then seep into the stone since it isn’t polished–thereby making it worthless to use different oils in?

  1. emilys oils and essentials says:

There are a few different models of stone diffusors out there, does yours use a candle? or water? is it just a stone with a depression for the oil? This is just a note about stone in general, being polished doesn’t mean that it is no longer porous. I’ll stop there less I go on about geology… I suspect that your stone is made to absorb the oil and release it slowly into the air. Most of the simple stone diffusors are designed that way. It is a very passive way to get the oils into the air.

The stone will be porus whether it is polished or not.

I would recommend for you to get some 190 proof grain alcohol if it is available where you live; if not; ask a pharmacist to order 190 proof denatured alcohol (a form of alcohol you cannot drink)

Then use the 190 proof alcohol to clean the basin that holds the water and oil.
