We all know the benefits of aromatherapy for adults. Relieving stress, healing ailments and eliminating pain, but what about children? Shouldn’t they benefit from natural holistic treatments as well?
While it is not advised to apply essential oils directly to the skin of children under the age of two, aromatherapy can be used in many different ways to benefit children as well as adults.
Aromatherapy can be used for children to help them unwind from a busy day, to calm and soothe them at bedtime, and throughout the day to provide focus and motivation. While caution is advised when it comes to direct contact with the skin, there are other ways that essential oils can be used for children.
• Aromatherapy candles placed throughout the home will benefit children as well as adults.
• Rather than making a child drink a chalky pink medicine to soothe nausea or stomach pain a hot cup of chamomile tea will provide relief through both the ingestion of the tea and the inhalation of the steam vapor. Natural healing that won’t interfere with modern medicine if it is needed later.
• A few drops of essential oil in a nighttime bath will help children relax and sleep well.
• A diffuser filled with a light relaxing scent in the child’s room will help promote good sleep.
The natural healing and relaxing benefits of aromatherapy can be used for children to give them the same calming, relaxation and mood lifting effects that adults receive from these essential oils. This promotes better sleep, more focus and motivation during the day and more evenly balanced moods.
This means that you don’t need to worry about exposing children to aromatherapy products in the home, as long as the essential oils are kept out of reach and not applied directly to the skin of a child under age two. Children will benefit from the aromatherapy just as much as the adults in the home.
Aromatherapy treatments have been used for centuries for stress, pain relief and even the relief of many physical ailments such as the flu, congestion, asthma, and digestive problems. Ancients used aromatherapy to treat themselves and their children without the benefit of modern medicine. Because it is all natural aromatherapy can be used along with many modern medicines for children and adults.
The exact dilution and diffusion of the essential oils is important yet there are many pre-made products that are ready for use in the home, even around children without any of the mixing and measuring.
